The Flounder Festival
Beyond the Flounder Festival, lovingly called FlounderFest, began as an idea to bring Arts awareness to the city of Burlington, but more importantly was a way to give back all of the experience and skills honed from time spent at Burlington Student Theatre. Being exposed to the many fringe festivals across Toronto, it was The Tarragon Spring Arts Fair and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre’s Rhubarb Festival that sparked a desire to create something for local talent.
It started in July 2001 with a handful of eager alumni and students from the Student Theatre Community, performing in various locations on the Student Theatre grounds. Since then more than 100 artists and creators have explored theatre, dance, music, visual arts, improv and more in this multi-space venue for hundreds of audience members. We marked our 10th season with an installation of “Stream of Dreams” dedicating each fish to those 100 festival participants over the years.
We are moving into our 15th season and the Festival couldn’t be more exciting. Reaching as far as Burlington, Hamilton and Toronto, this Festival is becoming a regional playground for artistic ideas and endeavours.
