Granite bench

In 2003 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the cities of Burlington and Apeldoorn to recognize the initiation of the twin city relationship. Louise, the granite bench located next to the Naval Memorial in Spencer Smith Park, was presented as a gift from Apeldoorn to the citizens of Burlington to mark the beginning of the twinning relationship. The City of Burlington signed an official twinning agreement on May 6, 2005 in Apeldoorn.

Apeldoorn is the Netherlands tenth largest city and is located in a beautiful sandy area in the middle of the country known as the Veluwe. Apeldoorn is one of the Netherlands most progressive cities with regard to sustainable development and the environment. This coupled with the historic strong connections with our veterans and its size, makes Apeldoorn an ideal twinning partner for the City of Burlington.
